Questions
Is the free plan really free?
Yes. Lookups, the card breakdown, network details and the currency converter are free, with no account needed. Free accounts get 50 lookups and 10 payment risk profiles a month, and looking up a BIN you've already checked that month doesn't count again.
Where does the data come from?
BIN data comes from public and licensed BIN databases, and the directory grows as BINs are looked up. Banks reissue and reassign ranges, so always confirm important details with the issuing bank.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. Paid plans will be billed monthly or yearly and can be cancelled whenever you like. You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.
Do you ever need my full card number?
Never. binlookup.xyz only uses the first 6 to 8 digits, which identify the bank and card type, not you or your account. Never share a full card number, expiry date or security code with any website you don't trust.

API questions
When will the BIN lookup API launch?
It's in development now. Join the early-access list and you'll be among the first to get an API key.
Do I need to send full card numbers?
No, and you shouldn't. The API only needs the first 6 to 8 digits. Sending only the BIN keeps full card numbers out of your requests and logs, which helps keep your systems out of PCI DSS card-data scope.
What data does the API return?
The issuing bank and its contact details, card network, credit or debit, card level, prepaid status, issuing country and currency, plus a payment risk score on the Business plan.
How much does the API cost?
API access is included with the Business plan. If you need higher volumes, get in touch through the early-access form.
Who issued your card?
Enter the first 6–8 digits of a card to see the issuing bank, network, card type and country.
Only the first 6–8 digits are needed. Never share a full card number, expiry date or CVV.
What is a BIN?
A BIN (bank identification number) is the first 6 to 8 digits of a payment card number. It identifies the bank or company that issued the card, and the type of card it is. You'll also see it called an IIN (issuer identification number), which is the official name in the ISO/IEC 7812 standard. The two terms mean the same thing.
Since 2022, Visa and Mastercard have been moving to 8-digit BINs. If a 6-digit lookup gives a general answer, try the first 8 digits for a more exact match.
What a BIN lookup tells you

- The bank or card company that issued the card, with its website and phone number when known.

BIN lookup FAQ
What is a BIN number?
A BIN, or bank identification number, is the first 6 to 8 digits of a debit, credit or prepaid card number. It tells you which bank issued the card, the card network, whether it's credit or debit, and the country it was issued in.
Is it safe to look up my BIN?
Yes. The first 6 to 8 digits are shared by many cards from the same bank, so they can't identify you or your account. Never share your full card number, expiry date or security code with any website you don't trust.
Where do I find the BIN on my card?
It's the first 6 to 8 digits of the long number on the front of your card. Many banking apps also show the start of the card number in the card details screen.
Can a BIN lookup tell me who owns a card?
No. A BIN only identifies the bank and the type of card. It contains no information about the cardholder, their account or their balance.
What's the difference between a BIN and an IIN?
None in practice. IIN (issuer identification number) is the official term in the ISO/IEC 7812 standard, because cards aren't always issued by banks. BIN is the older name and is still the one most people use.
Why does a lookup show a different bank than I expected?
Banks merge, rebrand and transfer card ranges, and some cards are issued by a partner bank on behalf of a shop or fintech brand. The lookup shows the issuer registered for that range. Your bank can confirm the details.
Why do some results say "Unknown"?
BIN databases don't hold every detail for every range, especially for new or less common cards. Try the first 8 digits for a more specific match.
Are BIN lookups free?
Yes. You get 50 free lookups a month with no account needed. Pro adds unlimited lookups, payment risk profiles, the full BIN directory and more.
